SEASON 2008 - 2009

Please note:  as at 28 September 2008 Nippers have closed for new registrations for the U6 - U11 age groups

What to do

All new and renewing Nippers must do a pool swim before they will be allowed to participate in Nipper activities.  Any Level 1 swim coach can sign off a pool swim prior to families registering their membership forms.  These pool swims must be bought or sent to the Life Saving office together with membership forms, payment and proof of age, such as Birth Certificates.  All members over 18 years of age must also complete a Working with children Blue Card form.

Attached is a pool swim form, membership form, Blue Card form, a transfer form for members who are transferring from another club and an Information booklet.

How to Join Us!

Linfox Southport Nippers would love to welcome all returning and new members this season

If you are interested in joining or renewing or would like further information about our Nipper program, please come to one of our Sign On days for 2008 - 2009.  Find out who we are and how we operate and even meet your Age Manager and some of the kids too!

We are about teaching your kids how to be surf smart and surf safe, while they get fit, improve their skills and have lots of fun with friends.  Many kids also love to compete at carnivals during the season - which are lots of fun too.

NIPPER FAQS!

Who can join?
Children aged 5 to 13 can become Nippers provided they can do the required pool swim and float to demonstrate water proficiency.  Once the season commences, kids over a certain age are also required to do a beach proficiency which is a swim at Main Beach and a short run.

Please note for safety reasons in our Gold Coast surf, kids above flippers (ages 5 and 6) do need to be able to swim independently.

How do we join or renew?

- New kids must bring proof of age (e.g. birth certificate or passport) please.
- New kids do their pool proficiency at the Sign On day (this is recommended).
- Returning kids can do their proficiency at Sign On or at training with Chris Redler or another Certified Coach.
- Kids and/or families join or renew with Southport SLSC by signing the membership forms and paying the fees at Sign On day (cash, cheque or EFTPOS)
- Buy your FAB Southport Nipper gear - bathers, rashie (highly recommended) and cap
- Get ready for the first day in September!

Any queries, please contact Sharon or Michelle in the Life Saving office on 55913895 (Ext 3)

Linfox Southport Nippers thanks TSS for the very kind use of it's magnificent facilities for our Sign On days and Club training.

Welcome to the 2008/09 season.
The Southport Surf Life Saving Club Junior Activities better known as the Nippers, is for many, the starting point for an enjoyable, long and rewarding association with the Surf Life Saving movement and especially our club.

It is important to note, we do not teach children to swim. Children must be competent pool swimmers and must pass the proficiency tests required for each age group before they are able to join the nippers. Parents are encouraged to become involved with our club by getting involved on the beach, in the surf or in and around the clubhouse. However, to assist with water safety you must be a proficient holder of a Surf Rescue Certificate or Bronze Medallion.

Registration
Registration will only be approved subject to their successful completion of the pool proficiency requirements – this includes a distance swim and a timed float. When registering for the first time, proof of age will be required.

Once registered, all children will be allocated to their appropriate age group (dependant on the date of birth at the 30th September) with whom they will spend the rest of the season. Each age group has a designated Age Manager and Assistant Manager. Some age groups may work together; this enables the most efficient use of personnel and the water areas. Each age group has its own recognisable mascot for easy identification.

Water Safety
It goes without saying, water safety is what Surf Life Saving is all about and Nippers are taught right from their first day about surf awareness and conditions. We place great emphasis on the safety during all Nipper activities and any other event arranged by Southport SLSC. There is a Safety Coordinator on the beach as well as qualified Surf Life Savers in the water at all times during Nipper activities

Training
We encourage and recommend training for all Nippers to develop fitness and skill levels especially for those members who wish to do more than their Sunday activities. We offer training in surf, board paddling,  beach sprinting and beach flags.
